Plug and Play
Portlets are, by nature, components of a web system that are predefined and can be plugged in to a particular section of a site in a very efficient manner. Each Portlet is a snippet of code, which in concert with all other selected Portlets, comprises a given section’s offerings. If one imagines the “real estate” of a webpage as a blank canvas, Portlets are functionalities and features, which do not overlap, that fill in the content of that page. Common Portlets include:
- Calendars;
- Video players;
- Discussion forums;
- Banner management tools;
- And any other basic web feature that is predefined and is able to be replicated.
With that in mind
Janmedia uses predefined Portlets (contained within J2EE and other prevalent languages) where appropriate and in circumstances where a client does not require custom work flow or functionality, to reduce the total development time and subsequent cost of rolling a new system out to market. Alternatively, and more impressive, is Janmedia’s ability to create custom Portlets within a client’s infrastructure. This enables Janmedia clients to dynamically generate new sections of their site that not only are content editable but functionality editable, without requiring a knowledge of any programming language as the replication process is pure point and click.
